Episode 002 - Maniac Magee

Hello, and welcome to the second episode of The Quill’s Nest. Today we are going to be talking about “Maniac Magee” by Jerry Spinelle. This is another book that I read and enjoyed as a kid. The Synopsis is : He wasn’t born with the name Maniac Magee. His real name was Jeffery Lionel Magee, but when his parents died and his life changed, so did his name. Maniac Magee was a legend. Kids were always talking about how fast he could run; how high he could jump; how no knot would stay knotted once he began to untie it. But the thing he was most known for is what he did for the kids from the black East End and those from the white West End of Two Mills. Maniac was special. And this is his story. I really like the way this story is told as if it were a documentary about a historical figure. Magee is cast as almost a child Hercules and these are his adventurers. The author takes time to explain childhood to his readers by reminding us of all the silly little superstitions and legends we ha...

Episode 001 - Stonewords

Hello everyone. Welcome to our first episode here on The Quill’s Nest. Today we are going to be discussing the book Stone Words, by Pam Conrad. This book and I go way back. It is the first book I remember checking out from the school library, and the first book that really had an impact on me. It was 30 years ago, when I was in third or fourth grade that I originally read this book. I loved it so much I continually checked it out from the library. After checking it out probably 20 times, the librarian stopped me and made me choose another book. I had a pretty rough time growing up and this book just spoke to me. I have no idea why I picked it up but it probably has something to do with the synopsis on the back which goes like this : "The first time Zoe met Zoe Louise, Zoe was four years old. Zoe Louise was more than one hundred. From that day on--living in the same house, separated by a staircase and a century--Zoe and Zoe Louise have been an important and permanent part of each o...

Welcome back to The Quill's Nest! This is a prelude episode to my first review which will be released on May 30th 2021. I will be taking a look at the first book I ever loved, "Stonewords" by Pam Conrad. The synopsis at the back reads, "The first time Zoe met Zoe Louise, Zoe was four years old. Zoe Louise was more than one hundred. From that day on--living in the same house, separated by a staircase and a century--Zoe and Zoe Louise have been an important and permanent part of each other's lives. Now Zoe is older. And although Zoe Louise never grows up, she is changing in dreadful and frightening ways. Time is running out for Zoe's best friend--and Zoe is the only one who can help her. To do so, she must travel back one hundred years in time and somehow alter the past. But in changing the past, must she also change the present? If she saves her friend's life, will she lose Zoe Louise forever?” If this sounds like a book you would like to read, I encourag...
Hello all! This is the blog for the Quill's Nest podcast . I'm Richard and my fine feathery friend over there is Artie the Owl. Thank you for joining us here at the start of our journey. When I was growing up books and TV shows were my best friends. I loved good stories and characters. I spent many days exploring new, fantastic worlds with the characters who became my companions. I have created this channel to spread my love of stories from all mediums. I want to share the stories and characters that helped me when I was growing up, and the wonderful new ones that I find every week. I am a writer as well as a reader. Beyond simply sharing stories, I also plan to offer my opinion on where things can be improved. For me, it doesn't matter what demographic a story is written for, how long it is, or how easy or hard it is to read or understand. All that matters is what it means to me, what it makes me feel. In short a good story is a good story. Everything else i...
